This section aims to help you with your own local history research and explains how the VCH goes about beginning research for a village, family, house and school.
Some of the How to... sections published here are from Particular Places , the VCH's introduction to local history. Written by Chris Lewis (Editor for VCH Sussex) to accompany an exhibition at the British Library in 1989 celebrating the publication of the 200th volume of the VCH, Particular Places is designed to whet the appetite for research into local history. It provides a lively introduction to the major issues the aspiring local historian needs to consider, and gives an overview of the main sources for local history. It introduces the VCH, and gives hints on how to start researching particular themes in the history of your locality.
