Activity 1: The Jason: More Than Just A Picture?
Art can be produced
in order to fulfil a wish to be creative, to produce something which
is beautiful, or for enjoyment. It can also be made to produce something
which contains a powerful message, tells a story or contains strong
symbols. Nicholas Pocock drew this picture of the Jason in around 1760.
This French-built ship was captured by the British and sailed as a privateer
by 1748. The Jason had 32 guns and carried 200 men.

This
is a picture of the ship called The Jason. You can click the panels
at the bottom of the picture to open larger versions of them in a new
window. This will help you complete the tasks below.
1.
Look at the two panels at the bottom of the picture. One panel shows
goods being brought ashore to the African traders. Click on the long
box which probably holds guns and is marked Bristol.
2. What is happening
on the other panel?
3. On a sheet of
paper, draw what you can see in each panel and write a caption beneath
to say what is happening.
4. Write down any
reasons you can give to explain why this image of the Jason might have
been produced
