Bristol...the slavery trail

Legacy

Today Bristol is a multicultural city, which means that there are people here of many cultures and backgrounds. There are many different languages spoken in addition to English, and there are many different ethnic, cultural and religious groups in the City.

It has not always been like this, and sometimes the City has not been good at recognising and welcoming new people, ideas and beliefs. There is still a need to explore what the people of Bristol did well in the past and celebrate what is achieved today, and there is also a need to heal old wounds and admit injustice from the past.

This section of the trail is about links in modern Bristol to debates about the Transatlantic Slave Trade from the past.

Modern Debates:
People do not always agree about what the past means and historians often argue about what is most important in causing changes or other events. These examples look at ways that the Transatlantic Slave Trade still has an impact on Bristol today.
